What is a QLD roadworthy certificate?
A QLD roadworthy certificate is also called a safety certificate. It confirms that a vehicle meets the minimum safety standards required for the relevant registration transaction in Queensland.
A roadworthy inspection is about safety items. It is not the same as a full mechanical report or a full pre-purchase inspection. A car can still have wear and tear that is not part of the safety certificate decision, which is why ongoing servicing still matters. If your car is due for general maintenance as well, you can also see our car maintenance guide.

When you may need a QLD roadworthy certificate
You may need a QLD roadworthy certificate when:
- selling a registered vehicle in Queensland
- transferring registration to a new owner
- registering a used unregistered vehicle
If you are not sure what applies to your vehicle, it is worth checking before you leave it until the last minute. The easiest way to avoid delays is to get the inspection organised early.
What gets checked in a roadworthy inspection
A safety certificate inspection focuses on the parts of the vehicle that affect basic road safety. That can include things such as:
- tyres and wheels
- brakes
- steering
- suspension
- lights and indicators
- windscreen and wipers
- body condition and other visible safety items
If your vehicle has obvious tyre wear, steering pull, braking issues or worn suspension parts, those should be checked before the inspection where possible. We already cover some of these issues in more detail on our site, including wheel alignment, tyre replacement and brake pad replacement.
Common reasons a car can fail a roadworthy
Many roadworthy failures come down to everyday safety items that have been left too long. Common examples include worn tyres, brake problems, faulty lights, damaged wipers, steering issues or suspension wear.
If your car has been pulling to one side, do not ignore it. That can point to tyre, steering, suspension or alignment issues. Have a look at our guide on why a car pulls to one side if that sounds familiar.
It is also a good idea to check basic things before booking, such as:
- all lights are working
- tyres have safe tread and no obvious damage
- wiper blades are in decent condition
- there are no obvious safety problems you already know about
How long a QLD roadworthy certificate lasts
In Queensland, the validity period depends on who is selling the vehicle. For most private sellers, a safety certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. For licensed motor dealers, it is valid for 3 months or 1,000 km, whichever comes first. That is why timing matters. Booking too early can create pressure if the sale or transfer takes longer than expected. Booking too late can also cause delays. If you need help planning the timing, contact our team and we can point you in the right direction.Roadworthy certificate vs logbook service
This is where a lot of drivers get mixed up. A QLD roadworthy certificate checks minimum safety standards for a registration-related purpose. A logbook service is routine maintenance based on the manufacturer schedule. They are not interchangeable. A car can pass a roadworthy and still be overdue for servicing. It can also be regularly serviced and still need a roadworthy inspection for sale or transfer. If your car is due for both, see our logbook service page as well. Why local drivers book their QLD roadworthy certificate with us
